This position will be responsible for providing on –site risk control surveys for both prospective and existing policyholder locations for the purposes of gathering underwriting information and providing suggestions for risk improvement.   

Specific duties include, but not limited to:

  • Surveying commercial agribusiness properties (buildings, industrial operations, etc.)
  • Consulting with insured's in regards to activities and programs available to control losses and improve safety
  • Providing training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to internal staff regarding regulations
  • Contributing to the development of safety materials and program.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational/industrial safety, or agribusiness
  • Loss control/safety experience in property/casualty insurance
  • Professional designations (CPCU, CSP, CFPS, CRM or ARMS) are a bonus but not required 

Skills and Abilities

  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to present and provide training information to small and/or large groups
  • Must be well organized, able to work on your own and be self-starter
  • Valid Driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle report required

Sr. Risk Control Specialist

Job Description:

Summary

Surveys commercial agribusiness operations and consults with owners, managers, employees, agents and underwriting to determine the type and level of exposures present and controls needed. Determines customer's ability to control the exposures by gathering information through physical surveys, program audits, loss history analysis, comparison to industry standards and customer interviews. Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to staff. Assists underwriting with risk selection and ongoing account management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Surveys commercial agribusiness properties such as buildings, industrial operations, commercial agribusiness operations and commercial vehicles to evaluate physical conditions, safety practices, and hazardous situations according to knowledge of safety standards, established underwriting guidelines and governmental regulations. Utilizes experience and technical expertise to survey large or complex operations as requested by Operations. Observes business operations and management practices to determine safety issues and hazards.  Analyzes history of accidents and claims and inspects scenes of accidents to determine causes and to consult in development of accident prevention programs. Measures insured area(s), calculates frontage, records description and amount of stock, and photographs or drafts scale drawings of properties to identify factors affecting risk acceptability and insurance premiums.   

Prepares timely written reports and correspondence of findings and recommendations for risk improvement. 

Consults with insured in regard to activities and programs to control losses and improve safety. Confers with employees of insured, provides informational materials and conducts training as needed to induce compliance with safety standards, codes and regulations. 

Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to internal staff regarding regulations, hazards and controls associated with area(s) of expertise. 

Maintains knowledge of the industry through association involvement.  Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards (OSHA, DOT) and local and national codes (NFPA, ICC) through participation in continuing education opportunities. 

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphasis in occupational/industrial safety, agricultural science, engineering or insurance; or ten years property/casualty loss control experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possesses in-depth technical experience in risk control disciplines including, but not limited to, fire safety, electrical safety, life safety, industrial hygiene, risk management, construction methods, agriculture risks, transportation risks, etc.  Extensive training and presentation experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to travel on a frequent basis including overnight; work in a self-directed environment; perform multiple duties in a fast paced environment; quickly and professionally respond to inquiries from customers; and prioritize and organize assigned tasks.  Expert knowledge of insurance coverages, local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to safety (DOT NFPA and OSHA regulations). Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.  Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Ability to navigate the Internet to conduct research. Experience with data warehousing programs is helpful.

Licenses/Certifications/Designations

Valid driver's license for travel.  Federal/State licensing and certifications required per area of specialty expected. Completion of or working toward CSP, CFPS, CDS, ALCM or similar designation.

 

Property Claims Manager

Job Description:

Summary

Provides vision, oversight, direction and overall management of Property claims handling.  Assists with training and education of staff.  Implements and monitors severity, complexity management and quality assurance standards and procedures.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Identifies high severity and/or complex Property claims via management reports, including FLASH, Large Loss, and Severity Management. 

Monitors high severity and/or complex Property claims by participating in handling, reserving, and resolution discussions in roundtable settings and through daily interactions with claims staff. 

Implements, monitors, and maintains Quality Assurance in Property claims through the audit process.

Develops, implements, and delivers strategic Property-based training for Claims Staff. 

Provides oversight, direction, and monitoring of storm claims and reports to senior management.     

Leads or participates in Property and general claims projects at the company level and with other W. R. Berkley companies. 

Develops and implements best practices, standards, procedures and goals. 

Recruits, trains, mentors and manages Property staff by providing leadership and direction.  Promotes development of technical and interpersonal skills of team members to leverage their contributions for the benefit of the company.  Provides frequent and specific constructive feedback to staff. 

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises Property staff.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Staff & Product Underwriting Manager

Job Description:

Summary

Provides leadership, strategic direction and effective management of the BARS underwriting functions. Is responsible for directly supervising the underwriting assistant/processing staff.  Is accountable for the product set, miscellaneous staff items, SSP platform technology stack, SOX and general compliance, internal quality control, and will also serve as a liaison to the other SSP WRBC operating units.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Manages, recruits, challenges, motivates and mentors the underwriting assistant staff to assure excellence in customer service, quality of policy transactions, and productivity.  Develops, maintains and documents quality assurance steps in the processing workflow.  Develops and updates Service Level Agreements as needed.  Leads and utilizes periodic team meetings to share information and solicit input from staff.  Is responsible for the coordination of training employees on the underwriting systems, guidelines, and best practices.   

Provides product development support and research, workflow efficiencies, and best practices for the underwriting department.  Is accountable for performing periodic file reviews for the underwriting department.  Provides frequent and specific constructive feedback to staff and underwriting management. Collaborates with BSS and BTS on product changes.  Participates in conference calls and meetings pertaining to our product platform.   

Collaborates and works with BTS/BSS on related platform issues including functionality, enhancements, and user acceptance testing to meet the standards agreed upon by the operating unit and BTS/BSS.   

Works with BSS, CWG and WRBC on any SOX and general compliance needs.   

Cooperates with other functional departments and WRBC operating units to assure that projects affecting the underwriting and processing areas are accomplished efficiently and objections are met.   

Monitors and reports on material changes within the commercial agribusiness insurance industry.  Reviews industry periodicals and journals, legislative actions and court decisions.  Provides necessary data reports to senior management and staff.   

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Actuarial Analyst

Job Description:

Summary

The Actuarial Analyst may be responsible for completing Rate Reviews and Actuarial Indications, completing regular estimates of adequate loss and expense reserves, participating in company's planning processes, and providing tools and analysis in support of pricing large accounts.  These activities are to be completed with direction.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Creates and submits rate filings, publishes and maintains product manuals.  This includes support for Competitive Market Analytics and other competitive position reviews.

Adapts and develops rating methodologies for both existing and new company products.

Identifies, retrieves, and prepares data in support of actuarial analysis through SQL, Essbase, and other data sources.  Includes internal data (exposure, premium, loss, claims, price, etc.) and various forms of external data (bureau loss costs, bureau trends, macroeconomic data, market share, market pricing, etc.)

Ensures the accuracy and suitability of data for the business need at hand.  Manipulates data, performs preliminary analysis and interprets data through Excel or other analytics platforms and presents recommendations.

Completes Rate Reviews, Ratemaking, and Actuarial Indications including support of forecasting investment rates of return, underwriting expense provisions, frequency/severity and exposure trends.  Gains management support for recommended changes.

Completes regular estimates of adequate loss and expense reserves, including any financial information pertaining to reserves needed by the Financial Department, company management, or corporate including but not limited to Schedule P.

Participates in company's planning processes.

For both Home Office and Regional Underwriting, identifies segments with profitable growth potential; identifies underperforming segments and proposes corrective actions to improve profitability.

Performs advanced analytics and modeling techniques including but not limited to generalized linear modeling and other forms of multivariate analysis.  Tools used could include SAS, R, Pretium, Emblem, and distribution fitting coupled with stochastic simulation techniques.  On existing models only.

Participates in enterprise risk management initiatives, including support for catastrophe management, economic capital modeling, internal rate of return studies, etc.

Provides tools and analysis in support of Underwriting's pricing decisions with respect to large accounts as well as small commercial portfolio price adequacy analyses.

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
