This position will be responsible for providing on –site risk control surveys for both prospective and existing policyholder locations for the purposes of gathering underwriting information and providing suggestions for risk improvement.   

Specific duties include, but not limited to:

  • Surveying commercial agribusiness properties (buildings, industrial operations, etc.)
  • Consulting with insured's in regards to activities and programs available to control losses and improve safety
  • Providing training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to internal staff regarding regulations
  • Contributing to the development of safety materials and program.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational/industrial safety, or agribusiness
  • Loss control/safety experience in property/casualty insurance
  • Professional designations (CPCU, CSP, CFPS, CRM or ARMS) are a bonus but not required 

Skills and Abilities

  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to present and provide training information to small and/or large groups
  • Must be well organized, able to work on your own and be self-starter
  • Valid Driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle report required
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook

Sr. Risk Control Specialist

Job Description:

Summary

Surveys commercial agribusiness operations and consults with owners, managers, employees, agents and underwriting to determine the type and level of exposures present and controls needed. Determines customer's ability to control the exposures by gathering information through physical surveys, program audits, loss history analysis, comparison to industry standards and customer interviews. Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to staff. Assists underwriting with risk selection and ongoing account management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Surveys commercial agribusiness properties such as buildings, industrial operations, commercial agribusiness operations and commercial vehicles to evaluate physical conditions, safety practices, and hazardous situations according to knowledge of safety standards, established underwriting guidelines and governmental regulations. Utilizes experience and technical expertise to survey large or complex operations as requested by Operations. Observes business operations and management practices to determine safety issues and hazards.  Analyzes history of accidents and claims and inspects scenes of accidents to determine causes and to consult in development of accident prevention programs. Measures insured area(s), calculates frontage, records description and amount of stock, and photographs or drafts scale drawings of properties to identify factors affecting risk acceptability and insurance premiums.   

Prepares timely written reports and correspondence of findings and recommendations for risk improvement. 

Consults with insured in regard to activities and programs to control losses and improve safety. Confers with employees of insured, provides informational materials and conducts training as needed to induce compliance with safety standards, codes and regulations. 

Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to internal staff regarding regulations, hazards and controls associated with area(s) of expertise. 

Maintains knowledge of the industry through association involvement.  Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards (OSHA, DOT) and local and national codes (NFPA, ICC) through participation in continuing education opportunities. 

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphasis in occupational/industrial safety, agricultural science, engineering or insurance; or ten years property/casualty loss control experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possesses in-depth technical experience in risk control disciplines including, but not limited to, fire safety, electrical safety, life safety, industrial hygiene, risk management, construction methods, agriculture risks, transportation risks, etc.  Extensive training and presentation experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to travel on a frequent basis including overnight; work in a self-directed environment; perform multiple duties in a fast paced environment; quickly and professionally respond to inquiries from customers; and prioritize and organize assigned tasks.  Expert knowledge of insurance coverages, local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to safety (DOT NFPA and OSHA regulations). Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.  Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Ability to navigate the Internet to conduct research. Experience with data warehousing programs is helpful.

Licenses/Certifications/Designations

Valid driver's license for travel.  Federal/State licensing and certifications required per area of specialty expected. Completion of or working toward CSP, CFPS, CDS, ALCM or similar designation.

 

Property Claims Director

Job Description:

Summary

Provides vision, oversight, direction and overall management of Property claims handling.  Assists with training and education of staff.  Implements and monitors severity, complexity management and quality assurance standards and procedures.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Identifies high severity and/or complex Property claims via management reports, including FLASH, Large Loss, and Severity Management. 

Monitors high severity and/or complex Property claims by participating in handling, reserving, and resolution discussions in roundtable settings and through daily interactions with claims staff. 

Implements, monitors, and maintains Quality Assurance in Property claims through the audit process.

Develops, implements, and delivers strategic Property-based training for Claims Staff. 

Provides oversight, direction, and monitoring of storm claims and reports to senior management.     

Leads or participates in Property and general claims projects at the company level and with other W. R. Berkley companies. 

Develops and implements best practices, standards, procedures and goals. 

Recruits, trains, mentors and manages Property staff by providing leadership and direction.  Promotes development of technical and interpersonal skills of team members to leverage their contributions for the benefit of the company.  Provides frequent and specific constructive feedback to staff. 

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises Property staff.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Summary

Responsible for driving risk control services excellence throughout the organization.  Creates an environment of continued growth, research, problem solving, networking and innovation to identify and develop more focused risk control products, processes, resources, and strategies to address existing and emerging industry, technology and regulatory challenges in relation to exposure lines of coverage or business market segments.   Promotes continuous improvement, increased consistency, quality, and value of risk consulting and service delivery to ensure alignment with core organizational objectives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for providing leadership, training, and oversight to field operations staff encompassing a national footprint and/or in-network consultants to maximize business performance in areas of specialty and maintain alignment with core business objectives and risk reduction outcomes. Collaborates with technical services risk control management and peers to facilitate transfer of creative content and knowledge. 

Responsible for team acumen to deliver account and agency stewardship identification, plan and delivery, i.e., new agency onboarding, account onboarding, continuing service plans, stewardship visits, etc.   

Identify priority projects and research initiatives to lead in the development of specialized risk control products, resources, strategies, training and services to assist field risk control in the reduction and/or mitigation of exposures.   

Manage and direct field operations staff to identify, monitor, and communicate immediate and long-range exposure trends for areas of specialty updating internal and external partners to coordinate, participate, and lead risk control consulting, training and fundamental exposure recognition efforts.   

Support recruiting efforts to ensure expertise of staff and network/contract resources align with insured risk exposures and risk reduction objectives.   

Measure effectiveness of improvement initiatives and present performance results to executive management.   

Manage and track field operations group expenses to maximize outcomes within budget and prepare projections for forecasting and developing annual budget plan.   

Provide risk consulting, evaluation and support as needed for exposures beyond the scope and expertise of field risk control staff and/or network of contract specialists.

Seven to ten years property/casualty loss control experience including progressively responsible management experience.  Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphasis in occupational/industrial safety, engineering, fire protection, or insurance preferred.  Working knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, local state and federal regulations pertaining to safety (OSHA, DOT, NFPA, EPA, DHS, ANSI).

Underwriting Assistant

Job Description:

Summary

Evaluates information and performs basic underwriting functions in support of the Underwriting staff.  Assures risks meet established eligibility guidelines and complies with company and regulatory standards.  Processes standard new business, renewals, quotes and endorsements within established time and quality standards.  

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Supports Underwriter by reviewing incoming correspondence and applications to determine proper procedural action.  Examines information provided in the application and related resources to determine if risk meets established eligibility guidelines. Consults agent or obtains reports for Underwriter when additional information is necessary.  Routes risk-involved matters that are beyond assigned authority level to Underwriter for evaluation. Processes policies for all lines of business.  Maintains established department service and quality standards.  

Evaluates standard renewal commercial property/casualty accounts and endorsements, within authority level, by reviewing updated account information, claims experience, risk control surveys, risk acceptability and pricing.  Consults agent for additional information when necessary.  Within authority, determines if account will be renewed or cancelled.  Routes risk-involved matters to Underwriter for evaluation.     

Performs policy administration system testing and quality assurance on an as needed basis.  Works with BTS and BSS to resolve system and product issues to ensure accuracy of the policies.   

Performs other related duties as assigned by management. 

 

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

Associates Degree from college or technical school; or two years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Commercial rating experience desired.
